After years of persistent rumours, Idris Elba has put the question to rest himself. The British actor, 53, said plainly in a recent interview that he was never really in the running to become James Bond and that the franchise is moving in a different direction entirely.

Elba spoke to People magazine during the press tour for his upcoming film ‘Masters of the Universe’, due in theatres on June 5, 2026. His words were direct. “My name’s not getting thrown out, no way,” he told the publication. “They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait. It’s going to be amazing.”

He went further. “I’m not in that race. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”

The comments came just days after Amazon MGM Studios confirmed on May 14, 2026, via a post on X, that the official search for the next 007 had begun. “The search for the next James Bond is underway,” the studio wrote. “While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”

A rumour over a decade in the making

Speculation about Elba playing Bond dates back to at least 2011, making it one of the longest-running casting rumours in Hollywood. His work in ‘The Wire’, ‘Luther’, ‘Hijack’, and several major action films kept his name in conversations about who could follow Daniel Craig as the iconic British spy.

Craig’s final appearance as Bond came in ‘No Time to Die’ in 2021. Since then, the question of his successor has dominated entertainment coverage without a firm answer from the studio.

Elba himself had spoken about the rumours multiple times over the years. In 2023, during an appearance on the podcast ‘SmartLess’ hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes, he said he felt “very flattered” by the speculation. However, he also noted the topic had turned uncomfortable when public debate veered into racial territory. “It became about nonsense, and I got the brunt of it,” he said at the time.

In 2024, speaking to ‘CBS This Morning’, Elba was more definitive. He called the Bond association “a massive compliment” but said he was “never going to play that character.”

The TikTok that reignited everything

In December 2025, Elba briefly stirred things up again. He posted a video on TikTok in which he posed alongside wax figures of all six Bond actors at Madame Tussauds London. The lineup included Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. The iconic 007 theme played in the background.

The video went viral. His wife, Sabrina Elba, appeared on ‘Good Morning America’ on December 22, 2025, and said she had encouraged Idris to post it, admitting she had “re-fuelled the fire” behind the rumours.

Open to a villain role

During the ‘Masters of the Universe’ press tour, Elba was asked whether he had any interest in joining the Bond franchise as a villain rather than the lead. He did not close the door on that possibility. He also jokingly told his co-star Camilla Mendes that she was “in” for the part of a Bond girl after she expressed enthusiasm about the idea.

The two films share a studio. ‘Masters of the Universe’ is an Amazon MGM Studios production.

Who is actually under consideration

With Elba out of the picture, attention has shifted to a younger group of actors. Names frequently linked to the role include Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Reports also emerged that British actor Tom Francis, 26, had auditioned for the part.

Casting director Nina Gold, known for her work on ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The Crown’, and the ‘Star Wars’ films, has been brought in to lead the search.

The team behind the new Bond

The next Bond film, which will be the 26th in the franchise, has assembled a significant creative team. Denis Villeneuve, the French-Canadian director behind the ‘Dune’ films, ‘Arrival’, and ‘Sicario’, was officially confirmed as director in June 2025. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, known for the ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Harry Potter’ film series respectively, are producing the picture. ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight is writing the screenplay.

Amazon MGM Studios gained creative control of the Bond franchise in February 2025 following a joint venture announcement with long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM’s head of film, addressed the casting process at CinemaCon in April 2026. “We’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect,” she said. “It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”

No release date has been set for the new film.
